Description:
Students will introduce themselves by sharing their name and something they like that starts with the same letter. This fun activity helps with name recognition, letter associations, and finding common interests.
Materials
Copies of Life Doesn’t Frighten Me by Maya Angelou
Art materials: paper, crayons, markers, glue, scissors, magazines
Chart paper or whiteboard
Steps
Introduction (5 minutes)
Set a tone of emotional safety by reviewing class agreements.
Let students know they’ll explore fear and bravery through poetry and art.
Read Aloud & Discussion (10 minutes)
Read the poem Life Doesn’t Frighten Me aloud to the class.
Ask:
“What did the author say she’s not afraid of?”
“What helps her feel brave?”
Personal Reflection (10 minutes)
Ask students:
“What are some things that frighten you?”
“What helps you overcome those fears?”
Briefly introduce historical figures (e.g., Rosa Parks, MLK Jr.) who showed courage.
Creative Expression (20 minutes)
Students list five things they care about.
Use art materials to make a collage or drawing of those things alongside symbols or words that help them feel brave.
Sharing & Appreciation (10 minutes)
Invite a few students to share their work.
Prompt the group to give appreciations to each presenter (e.g., “I like how you included…”).
Closing (5 minutes)
Reflect on how we can support one another when we’re afraid.
Reaffirm: “Life doesn’t frighten me at all—when we face it together.”
