Description:
Students reflect on their identity and heritage by writing personal poems inspired by Langston Hughes’ My People.
Materials
Copy of My People by Langston Hughes
Writing paper
Pens, pencils, markers
Steps
Introduction & Framing:
Let students know they will read a poem and write their own inspired version.
Review classroom agreements to ensure a respectful and safe environment for sharing.
Model Sharing:
Share about your own family background and describe your community using positive, personal language.
Read Aloud the Poem:
Read My People by Langston Hughes.
Brainstorm as a Group:
On the board or chart paper, collect ideas:
Descriptive words for their people, family, culture, or community
Places their families come from
Poem Writing & Art:
Give students time to write their own “My People” poem.
Invite them to create an accompanying drawing if they wish.
Sharing & Affirmation:
Invite a few students to share their poem or picture.
Ask others to offer appreciations for what was shared.
