Description:

Students reflect on their identity and heritage by writing personal poems inspired by Langston Hughes’ My People.

Materials

  • Copy of My People by Langston Hughes

  • Writing paper

  • Pens, pencils, markers

  • Lesson script

Steps

  1. Introduction & Framing:

    • Let students know they will read a poem and write their own inspired version.

    • Review classroom agreements to ensure a respectful and safe environment for sharing.

  2. Model Sharing:

    • Share about your own family background and describe your community using positive, personal language.

  3. Read Aloud the Poem:

    • Read My People by Langston Hughes.

  4. Brainstorm as a Group:

    • On the board or chart paper, collect ideas:

      • Descriptive words for their people, family, culture, or community

      • Places their families come from

  5. Poem Writing & Art:

    • Give students time to write their own “My People” poem.

    • Invite them to create an accompanying drawing if they wish.

  6. Sharing & Affirmation:

    • Invite a few students to share their poem or picture.

    • Ask others to offer appreciations for what was shared.
