Students examine and challenge gender stereotypes by analyzing outdated messages and creating modern comics that promote gender equality.

Modern Comic Book Template (downloadable from buildingintentionalcommunities.com)
Coloring materials (optional)
Steps
Introduction to Gender Equality:
Ask: “What does gender equality mean to you?”
Define it as equal opportunities and value for all genders.
Comic Book Analysis:
Distribute the 1970s Comic Book handout.
Ask:
Do you agree with these images?
Are they always true? Can you think of exceptions?
Discuss Limiting Messages:
Explore how media sends messages about gender roles.
Ask how the comic could be changed to reflect gender equality.
Create Modern Comics:
Distribute the modern comic book template.
Students work individually or in pairs to create new comics that portray gender equality.
Share & Reflect:
Students share one panel or image they created with the class.
Optional: Assemble into a “Gender Equality Quilt” for display.
Debrief Questions:
What did you learn about equality today?
What will you do differently now?
What words or phrases limit what boys and girls can do?
How can we support people who challenge gender norms?
