Students explore the concept of “freedom dreaming” by reflecting on Black history and envisioning a future shaped by justice, creativity, and collective joy.

Learning Objectives

  • Define “freedom dreaming” and understand its connection to Black history and social movements

  • Reflect on personal and collective definitions of freedom

  • Create a personal artifact that represents their vision for a freer future

  • Deepen self and social awareness through discussion, creativity, and reflection

Materials Needed

  • Chart paper or whiteboard

  • Markers

  • Graphic organizers (Freedom Dream word web, Black Futures organizer)

  • Student notebooks or blank paper

  • Art supplies (crayons, markers, collage materials)

  • Device to play video

  • Optional: music device for TikTok/step activities

  • Lesson script

Lesson Structure

CYPHER (10 min)

  • Ritual: Libation / Acknowledgements / Apologies / Announcements / Affirmations

HOOK (5 min)

  • Prompt: “If you could design a world where everyone feels young, gifted, and free, what would it look like?”

  • Silent reflection + group sharing

  • Introduce the day’s theme: Freedom dreaming as a tool for change

Part One: What Does Freedom Mean to You? (20 min)

Part Two: Create a Freedom Dream Artifact (25 min)

  • Options: Letter/rap, poem, visual art, TikTok dance/step
